Visiting Augusta National: A Golf Fan’s Planning Guide

· Major Golf Hub

Plan an Augusta golf trip with realistic access advice, Masters ticket tips, nearby hotels, restaurants and seasonal guidance.

Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, is a legendary destination, but visiting requires a different approach from booking a golf holiday. This is a private members’ club, and most fans experience it as Masters spectators rather than players. Build your plans around that distinction, then choose accommodation, restaurants and travel arrangements to match your visit.

Playing the course

Visitors cannot book a tee time at Augusta National. Ordinary guest play requires a member’s invitation, and there is no published public green fee or ballot for playing slots. The club does not offer public tours either.

For the general public, the realistic route inside is a valid spectator ticket to an event. A trip to Augusta, a nearby hotel reservation or a visit outside tournament week does not provide club access. If playing the course is your main ambition, keep that separate from planning a spectator trip: the two are not interchangeable.

When to go

April is the prime choice for the Masters, spring flowers and pleasant daytime weather. Rain and thunderstorms remain possible, while tournament demand sends hotel rates sharply higher. It is the obvious month for the event, but not one to budget for using ordinary room prices.

March–April and October–November are good periods for exploring Augusta in milder conditions. September can still be hot, and autumn brings shorter days. Summer, from June through August, is hot and humid, with long days and possible afternoon thunderstorms. Winter brings cooler weather, short days and occasional frost. The city is quieter then, but neither winter nor summer offers public course access.

Getting there

Augusta Regional Airport, AGS, is the nearest airport with scheduled passenger service. The drive to the club normally takes around 25–35 minutes. Columbia Metropolitan Airport, CAE, is an alternative approximately 75–90 minutes away.

A rental car or taxi is practical, and Augusta has no Amtrak service. During the Masters, allow substantially longer journey times. Treat the normal driving estimates as a starting point rather than a reliable tournament-week schedule, especially when coordinating flights, hotel check-in and your day at the course.

Where to stay

Staybridge Suites Augusta, on Center West Parkway near Washington Road, offers suites close to the course and is useful for longer stays. Its $ price tier reflects non-Masters dates; rates rise sharply during tournament week.

Candlewood Suites Augusta, on Claussen Road near Riverwatch Parkway, is a value-oriented suite option a short drive from the club. Its $ tier also applies outside Masters week.

Holiday Inn Express Augusta North - GA, on Stevens Creek Road, provides a practical base near Washington Road and the course. The usual tier is $, but normal price levels do not apply during the Masters. Book early for a tournament visit and compare the actual dates rather than relying on these baseline categories.

Where to eat

Incendio in Summerville serves contemporary Italian cooking in a historic firehouse, with a wood-fired oven and an inclusive employment mission.

Abel Brown, in Surrey Center, West Augusta, pairs refined Southern cooking with an oyster bar. Reserve well ahead during the Masters.

Oliviana Bar Italiano & Pizzeria, in Surrey Center, Summerville, is a neighborhood Italian restaurant offering handmade pizza and an upscale bar. Reserve during tournament week here, too. All three restaurants sit in the $$ price tier, so make room for dining when setting your overall budget.

Watching the major

Apply for the official ticket ballot through masters.com. It normally takes place in June the year before the tournament; check the current dates and eligibility rules rather than assuming the schedule is unchanged.

Monday–Wednesday practice days require separate tickets and are good for exploring the course. Cameras are normally permitted on those days, but not on tournament days. Mobile phones are prohibited on the grounds throughout the week. Arrange meeting points with your companions beforehand, and wear comfortable walking shoes so that your attention stays on the golf.
