Visiting Prestwick Golf Club: Play Golf History on the Ayrshire Coast

· Major Golf Hub

Plan a Prestwick golf trip with visitor green fees, seasonal advice, transport, hotels and dining at the birthplace of The Open.

Prestwick Golf Club in Prestwick, Ayrshire, brings together playable golf history and Scotland’s coast. For golf fans, the appeal is the opportunity to book a round at the birthplace of The Open. Think of this as a trip built around playing and appreciating that history, rather than attending a major championship at the club.

Playing the course

Visitors can play Prestwick, booking through the “Book A Tee Time” link at prestwickgc.co.uk or by contacting bookings@prestwickgc.co.uk. Before arranging the rest of your trip, check the official website for visitor slots, handicap requirements and booking terms.

Published 18-hole fees for May–September 2026 are £340 Monday–Thursday and £380 Friday and Sunday. The corresponding October 2026 rates are £275 and £340. These figures do not provide a Saturday rate, so do not assume one from the other days.

For a round paired with lunch, investigate the Wednesday Prestwick Experience package. It combines golf with a three-course lunch in the club dining room, excluding drinks. Check its booking and dress requirements before making plans.

When to go

May–September is the natural first choice, with longer days and generally milder weather. Summer daylight suits a golf trip, but coastal wind can still shape the round, and rain remains possible. Choose your dates with those conditions in mind rather than expecting settled weather.

Spring brings lengthening days and more scope for golf; warm layers and waterproofs belong in your packing plans. Autumn requires closer attention to daylight. October’s lower published green fees offer a reason to consider it, balanced against shorter days and more weather-dependent play.

For winter, confirm availability and current rules directly. The club’s 2024 terms required play from mats or moving the ball to the side of the fairway. Treat that as historical guidance, not confirmation of the arrangements for your visit.

Getting there

Glasgow Prestwick Airport is the nearest airport and has its own station on the Glasgow Central–Ayr railway line. The airport quotes about 40 minutes by train from Glasgow Central to the airport, not to the club. Keep that distinction in mind when timing your arrival.

Plan the final connection via Prestwick Town or taxi, checking current services with ScotRail. Road access to the area is via the M77/A77. Use the club’s official directions and live journey times rather than assuming a fixed transfer time.

Where to stay

The club lists options in Prestwick, Ayr and Troon. Carlton Hotel, on Ayr Road in Prestwick, is a practical base in town, with an indicative price band of $.

Western House Hotel, on Craigie Road in neighbouring Ayr, is listed at $$. Lochgreen House Hotel, on Monktonhill Road in Troon, is listed at $$; arrange transport to the course if staying there.

These bands are guides, not room quotes. Check current rates for your dates and consider how your accommodation choice fits the journey to your tee time.

Where to eat

The club’s Dining Room on Links Road features in the Wednesday Prestwick Experience. Its $$ band is indicative, not a standalone menu price. Confirm booking and dress requirements.

For British dining in nearby Ayr, consider The Stravaig on Miller Road, with an indicative $$ band. Check its current menu, prices and opening hours.

Blues – at the park, on Rugby Road in Kilmarnock, offers modern European dining and is also marked $$. This is a farther-away regional alternative, not a restaurant close to the course; factor that into your evening transport plans.

Watching the major

Prestwick is the birthplace of The Open, but not a current championship host. Its attraction here is a golf-history visit and the chance to play, rather than a major tournament week.

To watch The Open, plan separately for that year’s host course. Check theopen.com for tickets, any ballot arrangements and practice-day admission. Keep those arrangements distinct from your visitor-round booking at Prestwick.
